About Us

Shellharbour Game Fishing Club was formed in 1999 by George Lee and nine other founding members.

The Club boats fish mainly from the Boat Harbour located in the village of Shellharbour, just a leisurely 45 minute highway drive south from the southern suburbs of Sydney.

Shellharbour GFC is a small Club with a rapidly growing member base, currently with around 100 members. With a strong emphasis on family involvement, the sport of game fishing and having lots of fun, our competiveness and camaraderie is revered by many other Game Fishing Clubs.

Although small compared to other Clubs, Shellharbour GFC has a number of very competitive boats and anglers, with tournament wins up and down the east coast of NSW, and is often represented by a full team of 5 boats at the NSWGFA Interclub Tournament held annually in Port Stephens.

Shellharbour Boat Harbour has direct access to open water, with just a 16nm trip to the Continental Shelf. Renowned game fishing areas accessible are the Shellharbour Kink, Mt Fuji and the Kiama Canyons; Wollongong and Port Reefs and Stanwell Park Canyons to the north; and The Banks and Jervis Bay Canyons to the south. There are numerous Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in our waters that also assist our fishing.

Shellharbour GFC runs two Pointscore seasons annually, with the Summer Pointscore from September to late in May, and the Winter Pointscore from June to late in August, and trophies are awarded to the winners of each Pointscore.

The Summer season fishes well for Marlin (Striped, Black and Blue), Sharks (Tiger, Whaler, Hammerhead), Mahi Mahi up to 25kgs, and Kingfish up to 20kg, often with Yellowfin Tuna and occasional visits from other pelagics including Shortbill Spearfish, Wahoo, Cobia and Rainbow Runner.

The Winter season starts firing in late May with late season Blue Marlin to 350kg, Albacore to 25kg, Yellowfin Tuna to 80kg and Mako Sharks to 350kg as well as occasional visits from Southern Bluefin Tuna.

Shellharbour Village has many varied types of accommodation available at reasonable prices, and a multitude of award-winning cafe’s, restaurants and boutique shops all within walking distance to the harbour.

The central business district of Shellharbour City is located just 3km to the north of the harbour and boasts department stores, large supermarkets, specialty shops, cinemas, restaurants, and has something for everyone of all ages.

Our home base is the Shellharbour Workers Club located on the corner of Shellharbour and Wattle Roads, and is arguably the largest club south of Sydney. With regular live entertainment by the biggest local and international stars, and a number of restaurants and function rooms as well as sporting facilities, we are very proud to call the Shellharbour Workers Club our Clubhouse.

Shellharbour Council has commenced the building of a 350 berth marina due for completion in 2012. This will be one of the largest marinas in the nation, and will enable our Club to fulfil our desire of becoming one of the premier Game Fishing Clubs in the Nation.
